Research and Development Engineering Internship/Co-opJune 20, 2019
Allurion Technologies is a rapidly growing, global, venture-backed healthcare company headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts with offices in Paris and Dubai. The Company was founded in 2009 by two Harvard Medical School students dedicated to helping consumers lose weight. The Company’s flagship program features the Elipse Balloon, a procedureless device for the treatment of overweight and obese consumers, an Allurion Bluetooth® body composition scale, and an Allurion smartphone app that tracks the user’s progress throughout their weight loss journey. The program leads to 25 to 30 lbs of weight loss in 4 months. The Elipse Balloon is placed in a 15-minute office visit and does not require surgery, endoscopy or anesthesia for placement or removal. The Company launched commercial operations in 2016, and 10,000 consumers have already experienced the Elipse Program. Allurion has been recognized as one of Fierce Medical Device’s Fierce 15, one of Boston’s 50onFire, and a top Emerging Technology by SAGES.
Allurion is seeking an intern or co-op to provide support for various R&D activities throughout the year. Typical employment periods are 3-6 months, depending on the intern or co-op’s curriculum or availability.
The candidate must have proficiency in mechanical engineering and/or material science, with strong analytical skills, effective communication skills, and a passion for hands-on problem solving. This position will take on projects to advance Allurion’s product stack and manufacturing processes. Mentorship will be provided by a talented engineering team in a fast-paced, regulated, quality-controlled work environment. The co-op will be expected to utilize and strengthen skills in standard testing (Instron), data acquisition, material acquisition, experimentation, composition of technical documentation, 3D modeling (Solidworks), 3D printing (slic3r, FDM), statistics (Minitab), and development of test fixtures.
This position is meant to provide value to Allurion while giving co-ops exposure to the tools, techniques, and lessons that can only be taught in a collaborative, quality-controlled engineering environment. A small company like Allurion offers exposure to a broader range of R&D activities than larger medical companies allow, although priorities can change in a moment’s notice. One day you may be designing, 3D printing, and testing a fixture to improve a new manufacturing process, and the next you could be following a protocol to evaluate a next-generation material or structure through a series of standardized tests. Effective communication, honesty, and enthusiasm are strongly valued here at Allurion, and every voice, from the CEO to our technicians, is heard and taken seriously.
• Mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials engineering, or related proficiency

• Effective time management skills
This position requires either (1) US citizenship, (2) Permanent Residency, or (3) other suitable documentation to permit hiring if you are not a US citizen or Permanent Resident.
