The Allurion Gastric Balloon Programme may be offered to candidates that meet the following criteria:
- Aged 18-65
- BMI 30 and above OR BMI 27 and above with adiposity-related complications
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have not had stomach or esophageal surgery
The Allurion Program consists of
A 16-week gastric balloon requiring no surgery, no endoscopy*, and no anaesthesia. 15-minute procedure.
Throughout the 6-month Allurion Program, keep your health team updated on your progress with the Allurion Connected Scale, Health Tracker, and Allurion App.
Your nutritionist will help you re-evaluate your relationship with food: they will keep you strong and healthy, and guide you to healthy, sustainable, dietary choices. You can make use of their coaching for 6-months - well after the balloon has passed.
How it works:
You swallow a capsule that contains the balloon attached to a thin tube. A 15-min outpatient procedure with no surgery, no anaesthesia and no endoscopy.
Once in your stomach, your doctor uses the tube to fill the balloon with liquid. With the Allurion Balloon, you feel full faster and for longer while eating less.
At approximately 16 weeks after placement, the Allurion Balloon self-empties and passes out of the body naturally.
Frequently Asked Questions
The placement takes place during a 15-minute outpatient visit. The Allurion Balloon is the first gastric balloon that requires no endoscopy* or anaesthesia for placement or removal. Simply swallow a capsule containing the deflated balloon with a catheter: once the balloon is confirmed to be in your stomach via X-ray, the balloon is filled with water through the catheter. A second X-ray is done to ensure the balloon is filled correctly.
Yes! The Allurion Program, a combination of our unique swallowable gastric balloon and a supported lifestyle change program, leads to nearly 2.5 times the weight loss than a lifestyle change program alone, according to an independent study.3
In another study, three-quarters of participants who attempted to lose weight over a year through calorie-controlled or restricted diets (72% of participants), exercise programs or courses (22%), and pharmaceutical treatments (12%), did not achieve a clinically meaningful weight loss defined as at least 5% of their body weight.4 The evidence shows that these isolated methods alone are not enough.

After the 15-minute placement you can go about your life as usual. However, you may have some side effects for a few days such as nausea. Your healthcare professional will advise you on care and nutrition after placement and the best plan to resume your activities such as going to the gym.
No. The Allurion Program is a discreet experience. Unless you tell people, no one will know you have had the balloon placed.
After approximately 16 weeks of the Allurion Program, multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that patients lose on average 10-15% of their total body weight.* If you still want to lose more weight, a second Allurion Balloon can be placed after completing the first program where you can expect to lose almost 23% of your total body weight after 12 months.1
A temporary balloon does not mean temporary weight loss. Up to 95% of weight loss may be sustained 12 months after the Allurion Balloon exits the body.1
No. After approximately 16 weeks, the Allurion Balloon deflates and passes out of the body naturally. In very rare cases, an intervention might be required.*

It is considered safe and a less invasive alternative to weight loss surgery.
